APPLYING OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM TO DEPORTATION

Widescale deportations, as promised by the Trump Administration are becoming more prevalent as the days go by. Their latest initiative outlines their plans to send deported illegal immigrants to third world countries most notably in the African Continent.  Our judicial system subdivides crimes into different categories and classes based on the severity of the offense. The way felonies are divided into classes or degrees (e.g., first-degree, second-degree, Class A, Class B) to further distinguish their severity is just one example of this. Similar classification systems have been used across the world. Empire Posts now asks, “Why isn’t this same classification system being used for a matter as fitting as immigration?” Immigrants are a large portion of the working economy and those who entered illegally to work and escape the harsh conditions of their country of origin whilst carrying no criminal record alongside them, many people believe, should be viewed in a different judicial lens than those who were caught entering the country to commit crimes against property and person and/or defraud the system in one way or another and benefit from doing so without any legal residential status. The current administration’s tireless pursuit of mass deportations as it stands, some may argue, seems to be a flawed attempt at solving a serious issue. While incentivized illegal immigration without boundaries has its catastrophic consequences as we saw with cases such as those of Laken Riley and Rachel Morin, the current administrations attempt at removing all illegal immigrants from the country many are saying, fails to realize that there is a difference in the offenses each illegal immigrant commits. Empire Posts wants to invite the reader to draw their own conclusions, should we abide by the judical system’s original method of sentencing criminals according to the degree of offense or should we simply judge all those who entered the country illegally as one set of offenders all of whom should recieve the same punishment, deportation.
